Bearing witness to the heat and the horror is the inexperienced Private Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), who, together with several fellow soldiers, is ordered to the outskirts of Baqubah to repair a water pumping station damaged by U.S. But, as Ocre discovers, in an atmosphere where resentment and anger fester, trying to win the hearts and minds of the locals is a task fraught with danger. It’s here, in the streets, squares and schools that he discovers the true cost of war. This is not a typical shoot-em-up war film. You might see more action in a documentary actually. But I like that it was written by a guy who actually served there so its true to what probably happened. But I like that it was written by a guy who actually served there so its true to what probably happened. (That in some people's cases it was not all shooting and excitement 24/7 but sometimes other.more boring tasks like helping Iraqi's rebuild stuff etc.) There IS a fair amount of action though, its just not done with a big enough budget to be anything that great. Its really more about the characters reactions to their predicament and just telling a story of what life was like there for an 'average' soldier. Overall it was a 'good' but not great war film. (I think the budget was so low that during 1 scene they could not even show a large enough location to show who he was shooting at so you just see a close-up of a guy shooting his gun at something, but you never see at what. It takes you out of the action as you can't see whats going on in the battle like most films would show and you end up a little bored just staring at a guy shooting a gun from the same spot for 2 minutes.) That was really the biggest negative I can give it though. Otherwise it did have some good action at times and the overall story was good and there are a lot of quality supporting actors in the film that help it as well. They made my daughter's wedding a fairy tale come true. All the guests were WOWED! The service, the food, the staff far exceeded excellence. Every guest felt like they received special treatment, not realizing that this is the standard the Sand Castle sets. Was this review helpful? March, 2012 My daughter & new husband held their wedding at the Sand Castle last Friday night and it turned out to be the best experience of her life. The moment you walk through the door they treat you with every courtesy imaginable. We held the service in the Garden area due to the fact that the weather was just beautiful (who would think.in March yet!!). For the guests who arrived early there is a Hospitality Suite where h'orderves and drinks were offered (many of the guests thought it was the Cocktail Hour.they had no idea what was ahead). The Cocktail Hour was magnificent with every food you could possibly desire. There was a special Martini Bar with three martini's named after their pets.so cute and according to the guests.delicious. After the Cocktail Hour the guests made their way to the Reception area which was beautiful. There they were treated to a four course meal (with seven dinner choices) all made to perfection. At the end of the night the Viennese Hour had no rivals.just yummy!!! Loula is just wonderful to work with and will try her best to fulfill every wish the couple may have.she certainly succeeded for our event. The Maitre d's.Mohammad & Bradley worked with every vendor to make sure the day went smoothly. They also made sure anything the couple, their parents and bridal party needed were right at their fingertips. All the staff was fantastic and attentive to the guests and I thank them with all my heart. If you had to score from 1-10.10 wouldn't be good enough. If you are planning an event this is the location to book.you will NEVER regret it!!! Was this review helpful? February, 2012 What an experience!!! From the moment we walked into Sand Castle we were treated like celebrities. All our special requests were accommodated down to my gluten free restrictions. Our guests are still raving about the food and service. They even packed up the venetian hour for us to take home as a surprise at the end of the night. Our matreds and bridal assistants were amazing!!! They were by our side making sure we had something to eat or drink all night. I think we were the only bride & groom that actually enjoyed their own wedding. Our dance floor was packed all night thanks to Genesis events, they know how to get the party started. We couldn’t be happier!!! Sand Castle is the perfect venue!!! Vicky & John:) 1.7.12 Was this review helpful? June, 2011 I have been to many weddings and thought I had seen the best of the best. Nothing could have top the experience I had at the Sand Castle attending a wedding. From the begining to the end nothing but professionalism. From parking of the cars to the host/hostess and waitress/waiters they were simply the best. If I didn't know better I would have thought they were hand picked one by one. Continue to great work and wish you many more weddings to come because it definitely worth what ever it cost. It’s a contrast that perfectly encapsulates the film’s push-pull between the wisdom of age and the optimism of youth, as well as the balance it strikes between zesty ambition and quiet resignation. Baumbach’s lead characters—a longtime husband and wife played with a natural, lived-in chemistry by and —are so vocal about how content they are as childless New Yorkers in their mid-40s that it’s clear they’re protesting too much. And yet, when they strike up an unlikely friendship with a spirited couple in their mid-20s, they can’t help but get sucked into their energetic vortex. As writer and director, Baumbach allows us to enjoy the silliness of the older couple’s newfound lust for life, whether it manifests itself in a trendy fedora or a hip-hop dance class. But since he’s the same age as Stiller and Watts’ characters, he’s also decent to them in their awkward fumblings. He is them, and they are us. At the same time, he offers a biting yet affectionate skewering of Brooklyn hipster culture through the characters of and, both for its ridiculousness and ubiquity as well as for the way it makes the rest of us feel impossibly old. The details are delightfully dead-on. These are people who make artisanal ice cream, ride bicycles everywhere, play board games and only listen to music on vinyl. (That golden oldie “All Night Long” by is among their favorites.) But there’s a catch: While Driver and Seyfried and their friends are actively retro, they also possess a generational entitlement—an expectation that they should have whatever they want, and have it now, without having to work too hard to get it. Stiller’s Josh, by comparison, has worked way too hard over the past decade on a dense and overlong documentary about intellectualism and power and some such; I won’t even bother trying to explain it to you because watching Josh try to explain it is amusing enough. His wife, Cornelia, is a smart and seasoned producer whose father (an underused ) is a pioneer of the genre along the lines of a Maysles or a Pennebaker. Josh yearns for such greatness and esteem, but it has eluded him. The character is a perfect fit for Stiller’s patented mix of restlessness and self-deprecation; more so than the one he played in Baumbach’s more dramatic “.” Yet Josh feels rejuvenated when Driver’s character, the wide-eyed and warmhearted Jamie, shows up to audit the college class he teaches and fawns all over him. An aspiring documentarian himself, he quickly becomes Josh’s new BFF; meanwhile, Jamie’s wife and constant companion, Seyfried’s foul-mouthed Darby, befriends Cornelia and impresses her with an effortless cool. Through zippy and well-crafted use of montage and production design, Baumbach beautifully reveals the contrasts in these two couples’ lives. There are traces of at work here as “While We’re Young” vividly makes fun of a specific subculture of hyper-articulate New York denizen, as well as the way its characters try to stave off the malaise of aging by clinging to characters who radiate the exotic promise of youth. But it also takes a clear-eyed look at the narcissism that can result from settling into a smug life of parenthood and domesticity, as evidenced by Josh and Cornelia’s former BFFs, played sharply by Maria Dizzia and. (Better known as Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys, Horovitz is great in this—a total natural and a surprising source of a calm and stability in a film full of flux.) But “While We’re Young” takes a turn in the third act as it grapples with some ethical dilemmas, and it doesn’t quite work. It becomes angrier and heavier as Josh uses his inquisitive nature to unearth some dark truths—both about himself and his new friends. It feels like a totally different movie as it reaches its very public climax, and an inferior one. Many Baumbach movies feature brilliant but immature people doing terrible things to each other (“”, “”) and “While We’re Young” is no exception. The observant and mocking humor that makes the film’s first two-thirds so breezy and enjoyable gives way to shattering realizations, but Baumbach ultimately tempers that instinct somewhat by exhibiting genuine sympathy for Stiller’s character. “While We’re Young” searches for the blurry line we all cross once we’ve entered middle age, finds it and tramples all over it, but it does so with kindness for those of us who’ve made that inevitable journey and survived with some dignity intact. ![]() Melding together genres seldom works. It’s a delicate balancing act; tone is key, and when either (or both) are off the whole thing can come crashing down. By 1991, HBO was already offering up original programming and decided to create a whole new sub genre – horror noir. The result was Cast a Deadly Spell, a very entertaining and perfectly concocted mixture of 1940s detective story and supernatural terror. And when the balance is right, like it is here, the results are sublime. Originally airing on HBO on Saturday, September 7th, CaDS was met with critical acclaim as a riotous mashup of Bogart and the Dark Arts, treating audiences to a unique blend of murder and magic. Let’s open up our sacred book of incantations, TV GUIDE, and see what we’re in for: CAST A DEADLY SPELL (HBO, Sept. 7 th) L.A., 1948. Private eye Harry Philip Lovecraft is hired to retrieve an ancient book in a town where everyone practices magic for their own gain – and sometimes pay for it with their life. Fred Ward, David Warner star. In an alternate reality, Los Angeles is a city where using magic is an everyday occurrence; some use it for success, some for love, and some for revenge. An ex-cop turned P.I., Lovecraft is hired by Amos Hackshaw (David Warner – Waxwork), a mysterious man of means, to locate his latest acquisition, the book Necronomicon, stolen by his chauffeur. Hackshaw needs the book returned in two days for a “conference”. After an encounter with Hackshaw’s headstrong teenage daughter, Olivia (Alexandra Powers – Sonny Boy), Lovecraft’s trail leads him to the Dunwich Room, a nightclub run by his ex-partner on the force, Harry Bordon (Clancy Brown – Highlander), where he finds his ex flame, Connie Stone (Julianne Moore – Boogie Nights) singing torch songs. To Lovecraft’s dismay, the book has far more than sentimental value, as it may unlock a portal to another world, where smog is the least of his concerns. So many questions come to mind after viewing Cast a Deadly Spell; for instance, why wasn’t this made into a series, instead of a belated, lesser received sequel ( Witch Hunt) with Dennis Hopper replacing Ward? Or, why does this not even have a DVD release, let alone a Blu-ray? It’s bewitching to say the least. This a film that easily could have been released theatrically; with an estimated budget of $6 million, shepherded by the powerhouse production of Gale Anne Hurd ( Aliens), CaDS looks terrific – the 1940s set design is gorgeous, and the practical effects are as strong as any for its time. HBO – remedy this please, and give us a physical release. With that public service announcement out of the way, let’s move on to why CaDS deserves to be seen by a lot more people than it has, starting with the script written by Joseph Dougherty. Coming off acclaimed TV drama Thirtysomething, Dougherty is tasked with not only finding a tone that balances all of the elements, but provide viewers with colorful characters to follow the mostly incredible events. This is something he handily accomplishes; CaDS does not attempt to be grounded in any kind of reality, except that which we know from movies. This is all glamorous gangsters and ghouls; the film is keenly aware, heightened, and affectionate towards the legacy of mob movies, and is filled with wry dialogue very much in the spirit of its hard boiled forebearers: “Magic is the way of the future, wouldn’t want to buck the future, would you Bradbury?” “If this is the future, I’ll take vanilla.” Or: “That’s quite a tie.” “Oh. Thanks.” “Put up much of a fight?” “No, I snuck up behind it.” And so on. CaDS loves gangster movies and it shows; from the neon lights to the finely cut suits and gowns. But it also loves horror; there is a death by paper cuts near the beginning that is stunning (and wonderfully shot), and we’re treated to gargoyles, pre-Romero zombies, gremlins, and of course, more than a passing interest in the literary works of H.P. This clever and well-crafted production (produced for Home Box Office) goes the distance with its innovative concept, which is equal parts Raymond Chandler and H.P. Cast a Deadly Spell (1991) is a comedy horror detective film with Fred Ward, Julianne Moore, David Warner and Clancy Brown. It was directed by Martin Campbell. Clash of Legends: Cast a Deadly Spell. Clash of Legends is a new type of event where you gain BT Pts by defeating foes in battles of different difficulty. Perhaps it’s a little on the nose; Ward’s name, the name of the nightclub, but I think they’re all in service of creating a world for future endeavors. And it isn’t just lip service; some of Lovecraft’s staples such as Cthulhu, The Old Ones, and the Necronomicon all play a part in the story, with an appropriately big finish that’s as good as anyone’s vision towards filming his “unfilmable” prose. Perhaps Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe never dealt with creatures from the unknown, but if they had, they’d be taking notes from our weathered detective. Director Martin Campbell ( Casino Royale) and his cast are all in on the take; he keeps the repartee lively and the action swift, and makes sure his players are all on the same page. Brown portrays blowhard Bordon with a wicked grin and a brusque demeanor; he’s almost as frightening as the conjured beings weaving in and out of the story. Warner is a joy as Hackshaw; enigmatic and animated in a way I haven’t always seen him. This was one of Moore’s first film appearances; first of all, she’s absolutely stunning, with piercing eyes and hair of fire, definitely recalling the smolder of Lauren Bacall – and the smarts, too. If you’re a fan of Ward’s no bullshit, seen it all characters, you’ll love him as Lovecraft; this was a role he was born to play, and as the one main character who doesn’t practice magic, he’s our guide through this world where illusion is summoned as easily as lighting a cigarette. While I don’t think Cast a Deadly Spell is a completely unique concept (dear old Carl Kolchak the reporter may have something to say on the subject), it certainly arrived at a time when horror needed an injection of originality. By making the monster hunter a gumshoe, HBO stumbled upon a refreshing, funny, and winning formula that begs to be explored further. So if I were you, HBO, I’d give Fred Ward a call so he can set up shop again, and pull those ties out of mothballs. The world could use a little Harry Lovecraft right about now. I had a hard time getting past the whole 'Hussy' thing. I mean, couldn't they have been called something more dignified, more threatening? Something that would strike terror in the hearts of those who seek to keep them from their calling? Anyway, the Hussy name was explained this way - “Well, thank you,” Sara replied. “And by the wayhussy? Do you have any idea what a hussy is?” Danu chuckled. “Clearly you have no idea of the etymology of the word. While rarely used today, the word comes from Old Norse, meaning ‘mistress of the household’. Before the seventeenth century it carried the connotation of a thrifty, orderly or capable woman. “Only in the seventeenth century did the sense of the word shift and take on the meaning of a rural woman of a low class. As is unfortunately often the case, the term unfairly degenerated to connote a woman of less than sterling character or moral standards. By the nineteenth century it had become a slur.' So there, you see! Being called a Hussy is actually a term of respect. From the prologue, I get the feeling that this is somehow series related, but that might not be the case. Sexual content - Oral, vaginal and a last minute encounter of the anal kind, thrown in for good measure. I read this because it was a freebie on amazon for kindle. However, I found the story hard to follow because it was told so quickly, skating over the background, descriptions, character and plot development, and storytelling that would have invested the reader more into the characters and what happened to them. As a result, the plot came out quite unbelievable, the characters pretty flat, and the romance underdeveloped (but over-narrated.) I would keep an eye on this author, because there is definitely potential there, but not waste time with this particular work--I'll be hoping for a future one that has been more developed. (I, personally, would have liked to read about two paragraphs for each one currently in the story.). To be honest, I had a hard time rating this book. As an erotic romance, it was just okay. There wasn't a lot of erotic content, and what was there, didn't really work for me. Not that it was bad. The sex scenes were sizzling. But they didn't really move the story forward. They dragged, there was no conflict, no tension, and the word 'hussies' was repeated over and over to the point of distraction. Overall, I felt it was a good read. And, for a free read, a substantial story with great characters and an interesting plot. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. I'm not enormously experienced in terms of reading the genre so I don't really have anything to compare to, so they struck me as a bit purple in places, and somewhat dull. Also, amusing. 'She exploded.' Sadly, the author pretty much sacrifices the plot on the altar of sex and the selling point of these legendary warrior women all gets a bit side-lined in favour of magic fixes to ensure the sex gets written in. Fair enough I guess. Still, it's written in a mediocre style, the two sex scenes had too much in common with each other to avoid skim-reading them and the plot makes enormous leaps from one point to another, only filling in the background details when a magical fix is necessary. I suspect strongly that there's better romance and erotica out there. This was a very fast read - it was entertaining and I loved how the two main characters' lives were intertwined. I think the reason this wasn't a higher rating for me is because I read Ciana Stone's other short story, An Unwanted Hunger, a day before this. I was dumbfounded when one of the sex scenes was the same in both books. I don't mean that the same things happen - I mean that literally the entire scene was copied and pasted with the names changed. I'm not sure which was written first, as they both have the same publishing month and year, but I was so surprised and somewhat disappointed! This book wasn't bad but I had a really hard time getting past the use of the word 'Hussy' as meaning a proud, powerful, warrior woman. Love of roots rock meets lo-fi magic realism in a Pennsylvania-set comic drama. In the music-fueled comedy All in Time, a Manhattan investment banker flies the corporate coop, returning to his Pennsylvania hometown to manage his favorite band. The “follow your bliss” setup might be the latest variation on a very old song, but filmmakers Chris Fetchko and Marina Donahue find a fresh hook, one that combines a charmingly no-tech sci-fi twist with a resounding affection for straight-ahead rock ’n’ roll. Though the first-time writer-directors don’t entirely avoid awkward patches or clunky dialogue, especially in the early sequences, they find a winning balance between high concept and downhome sensibility. Using a mix of low-key magic realism and relatable characters, they offer convincing, unpredictable solutions to standard movie-formula dilemmas over the work-life balance. Sean Modica brings an Everyguy quality to the role of Charlie, who’s first seen in suit and tie, wistfully listening to a busker before returning to his gray cubicle. The year is 1996, back in the music business’s pre-Internet, pre-Great Recession era. The recent period setting is crucial to the movie’s old-school vision (and its low budget). The filmmakers also mine it for subtle humor, as when Charlie’s mother bemoans his having turned his back on the “job stability” at Lehman Brothers to pursue his dream. See more The dream, such as it is, plays out with hard work and little money as Charlie and his devoted intern, Clark ( Jean-Luc Bilodeau), try to get Wilkes-Barre faves the Damnsels to the next level. With one hit and one major tour behind them, they’re 15 years into a career that has stalled on the local club circuit — all of which rings potently true. On the other hand, the indifference of the band’s songwriter-guitarist, Glen ( Josh Burrow) — the only Damnsel who gets any attention as a character — feels forced and flat. Bitter over the “suits” who nixed the album he considers his personal best, Glen has one foot out the door, throwing the inevitable monkey wrench into Charlie and Clark’s plans for a concert featuring long-anticipated new material. Their last-ditch marketing hook for the show is a “time traveler” theme, inviting people to don duds from the rock era of their choosing. In a simple, affecting twist, some of those rock T-shirts on concertgoers might actually be from the future. Glen’s desire to spend more time with his daughter dovetails with the standoff that develops between Charlie and his girlfriend, Rachel ( Vanessa Ray, of the cop series Blue Bloods), who’s tired of competing with the band for his time and attention. Like most of the film’s characters, she’s represents an idea rather than flesh-and-blood complexity. Even so, her own career struggles make her more than the typical perennially slighted significant other. Perhaps it’s the balance of male and female in the writing team, but the movie avoids the kind of pat answers that can push so many screen romances into fantasyland. When Rachel and Charlie have it out, their argument cuts to the core of who they each are, and proves transformative in unexpected ways. Furthering such breakthroughs is Charlie’s sometimes intrusive elderly neighbor, played by standout Lynn Cohen. Urging him to embrace life’s detours, she ultimately connects the story’s increasingly mysterious dots, her insights sharp and bromide-free. Fetchko is drawing on his experiences managing Pennsylvania band the Badlees, who provide the Damnsels’ rootsy rock, a vital element of the movie’s persuasiveness. (The band’s lead singer and drummer, Pete Palladino and Ron Simasek, also play their onscreen counterparts, while Ellis Paul provides Glen's singing voice in a pivotal scene.) As Charlie’s second client, singer-songwriter Laura Shay adds another strong indie facet to the movie’s soundtrack, although the character’s “who me?” attitude is a bit disingenuous given the polish of her songs. In contrast to some of the overripe caricatures in the Brit comedy Still Crazy, the Damnsels look and act like middle-aged rockers. Spinal Tap-worthy moments arise without undue emphasis, as when the band’s name is misspelled on a marquee because the venue proprietor “needed the ‘L’ for ‘cole slaw.’” The production’s tech and design aspects are solid and fittingly understated. Love of the music is signaled in the opening credits, which make clever use of equipment cases being unloaded by roadies. In unfussy fashion, d.p. Dunlap ( Shaun of the Dead) captures a world both lived-in and transcendent, from the Wilkes-Barre settings to the inventively matter-of-fact metaphysics that are all about fans’ ineffable gratitude and devotion. During the series, she and Will develop feelings for each other, and eventually become a couple. • as Will (series 3), a skilled swimmer and free-diver who is introduced in series three. While exploring Mako Island, he finds the moon pool and is attacked by the water, causing him to search for the cause of the strange event. He is Bella's love interest and becomes closer to the girls once he discovers they are mermaids. Supporting [ ] • Burgess Abernethy as Zane, who is the arrogant local bad boy. In series one, he becomes obsessed with discovering the identity of the mermaids after catching a glimpse of one. He later develops an on-again, off-again relationship with Rikki. At the end of series one, when he finds out she, Emma and Cleo are mermaids, he stops his obsessive behaviour to protect Rikki. In series three, he transforms the Juice Net cafe and goes into a business partnership with Rikki, naming the cafe after her. • as Charlotte (series 2), the new girl who becomes the main antagonist of series two. She enjoys the arts and sciences, but can be controlling and manipulative. She comes into conflict with the girls, especially Cleo, when she begins to date Lewis subsequent to his break-up with Cleo. Upon transforming into a mermaid, she obtains all of the girls' collective powers - clarified as being due to the fact that she was exposed to the transformation conditions on her own rather than the original three being present at the same time. She permanently loses her abilities after a confrontation with the trio. She does not return in series three. • as Ash (series 2), a keen and riding coach who appears during series two. He forms a relationship with Emma, but does not learn of her being a mermaid until the season finale, when Emma reveals her identity. Horner does not appear in series three due to filming. • as Sophie (series 3), an ambitious and driven character who becomes the main antagonist of series three. She is Will's older sister and takes an immediate dislike to Bella because Sophie sees her as a threat to Will's success as a free diver. She becomes a manager in Rikki's cafe and does as much as possible to cause grief for the mermaids, including destroying Zane and Rikki's relationship. She also tries to get her brother Will to go against Bella by saying she is a distraction. Episodes [ ]. The custom costumes took six months to build, with the tails and tops made from body casts and comprising individually hand-crafted scales. The finished product weighs between 12 and 15 kilograms (26 and 33 lb). Inside the tail are leg straps where the girls are strapped up and then zipped up. Once in costume, the girls have to be lifted into the water. Attempts were made to minimise the on-screen visibility of the zips on the tails, such as adding extra scales and crafting a ridge of material around the length of the zip. The tail fin itself was designed with a foot pedal to assist the actresses with swimming. This, along with the fin, adds some 60 centimetres (2 ft) to the length of the costume. An opening in which a player seeks to obtain some advantage by sacrificing a pawn or piece. Oct 12, 2017. Gambit always was known for being a romantic, so it's only appropriate that his movie is opening on Valentine's Day. 20th Century Fox has set a Feb. 14, 2019 release date for Gambit, the X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum. Fox's Deadpool opened to big numbers over Valentine's Day weekend in. Queen's Gambit. The gambit is introduced by 2.c4. If Black takes the pawn (dxc4), White can move e2–e4 and take control of the center, while threatening to capture the black pawn with the bishop (Bxc4). A gambit (from ancient gambetto, meaning 'to trip') is a in which a player, more often,, usually a, with the hope of achieving a resulting advantageous position. Some well-known examples are the (1.e4 e5 2.f4), (1.d4 d5 2.c4), and (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4). A gambit used by Black may also be called a gambit (e.g. The —1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 or —1.d4 e5), but is sometimes called a 'countergambit' (e.g. The —1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 and, an old-fashioned name for the Latvian Gambit). The word 'gambit' was originally applied to chess openings in 1561 by priest, from an Italian expression dare il gambetto (to put a leg forward in order to trip someone). Lopez studied this maneuver, and so the Italian word gained the Spanish form gambito that led to French gambit, which has influenced the English spelling of the word. The broader sense of 'opening move meant to gain advantage' was first recorded in English in 1855. Queen's Gambit Declined Gambits are often said to be 'offered' to an opponent, and that offer is then said to be either 'accepted' or 'declined.' If a player who is offered a gambit captures the piece (and thus gains material) the gambit is said to be accepted. If the player who was offered the gambit ignores it and instead continues his or her development, then the gambit is said to be declined. In modern chess, the typical response to a moderately sound gambit is to accept the material and give the material back at an advantageous time. For gambits that are less sound, the accepting player is more likely to try to hold on to his extra material. A rule of thumb often found in various primers on chess suggests that a player should get three moves (see ) of for a sacrificed pawn, but it is unclear how useful this general maxim is since the 'free moves' part of the is almost never the entirety of what the gambiteer gains. Of course, a player is not obliged to accept a gambit. Often, a gambit can be declined without disadvantage. Soundness [ ] A gambit is said to be 'sound' if it is capable of procuring adequate concessions from the opponent. There are three general criteria in which a gambit is often said to be sound: • Time gain: the player accepting the gambit must take time to procure the sacrificed material and possibly must use more time to reorganize his pieces after the material is taken. • Generation of differential activity: Often a player accepting a gambit will decentralize his pieces or pawns and his poorly placed pieces will allow the gambiteer to place his own pieces and pawns on squares that might otherwise have been inaccessible. In addition, bishops and rooks can become more active simply because the loss of pawns often gives rise to open and. Former world champion, one of the most extraordinary attacking players of the 20th century, once reportedly told that he had sacrificed a pawn because it was simply in his way. • Generation of positional weaknesses: Finally, accepting a gambit may lead to a compromised, holes or other positional deficiencies. A good example of a sound gambit is the: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4. Here Black can force White to sacrifice a pawn speculatively with 4.Bb4+, but White gets very good compensation for one pawn after 5.c3 dxc3 6.bxc3, or for two pawns after 6.0-0 inviting 6.cxb2 7.Bxb2, due to the development advantage and attacking chances against the black king. As a result, Black is often advised not to try to hold on to the extra pawn. A more dubious gambit is the so-called: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5?! Here the investment (a knight for just one pawn) is too large for the moderate advantage of having a strong center. Examples [ ]. This is not a true gambit by Black, since after 4.Nxe5!? Black wins material. White can (and from this position should) play a gambit himself with 5.Bxf7+!
