2/3/2018 0 Comments Je T'aime John Wayne![]() All about Je t'aime John Wayne (2000) English Cinema, Trailer, Video clips, Je t'aime John Wayne Reviews, Expert Reviews, Story, Photo Gallery, Trivia & Goofups and. This short is a cineaste's delight, a parody so lovingly detailed it becomes a celebration. 'Je t'aime John Wayne' is a reworking of Godard's classic 'A bout de souffle'. In that film, Jean-paul Belmondo played a petty hood who modelled himself on Humphrey Bogart. In this, Kris Marshall is Belmondo, aka Tristan, a middle class English boy in love with all things French - he speaks ponderous French all the time, dresses sharply, philosophises, epigramises (sic?), poses. The director of this film, Toby MacDonald, however, succeeds where Godard 'failed'. In 'Souffle', we were intended to notice the disparity between Belmondo's Frenchness, posturing and insignificance, and Bogart's mythic cool. Unfortunately, Belmondo is so charismatic and cool and funny, filmed in energetic, sunny monochrome against a delicious jazz backing, that he himself, unwittingly, became a figure of mythic cool. Tristan is not the first person to be dazzled by Belmondo's persona - sure, I've done it myself, snarling 'Te es vraiment deguelasse' at my mirror. France, to foreign eyes, especially in the 50s and 60s, is so romantically cool. So Godard fails. England, however, is not very cool, especially when it tries to ape European sophistication. So although MacDonald expertly mimics Godard's enthusiastic jump-cut style and breezy music, Tristan is less successful. Every attempt at cool is hampered by bathos. The name 'Tristan', for a start, is public-school naff, and his brilliant answering machine message (with the Duke threatening any caller) is spoiled somewhat by his mother's middle class concern. A rendezvous we assume to be a romantic account with an unobtainable blonde turns out to be his loud little sister, who brings a little friend (he punishes them by bringing them to an excruciatingly pretentious art movie). A long exercise in posed cool turns out to be an uncool wait for a very uncool bus. This is all very amusing, but could seem like rather a petty object of satire - middle-class pseuds trying to be French. The film transcends this pettiness in two ways. Firstly, although Tristan is ridiculous, he is never a contemptible figure of ridicule. This is where the Englishness comes in - the disparity between Tristan's dreams and reality becomes poignant. Ultimately, the film affirms these dreams, the power they give Tristan to transcend his banal reality, even if he is so lost in them, he has no more purchase on any kind of reality. This is helped by the pastiche stylings being rooted in a very real, documentary London. Even more than this, the film's fun conceals a melancholy elegy for European cinema and its decline. Godard may have made a film about a slavish imitator, but his film, despite its borrowings, was something radically new, which contained the possibility for revolutionising the cinema. Twenty years later, however, it was as if it hadn't been made, cinema settling into the rut of offensive banality it's been happy to be stuck in since. Unlike Godard, MacDonald is as much of an imitator as his hero - we no longer believe in the possibility of anything new in cinema: it's sad, but significant, that one of the most inventive films around at the moment should be a pastiche of past glories. An utterly wonderful short film showing a day in the life of a Jean Paul Belmondo wannabe, living his life as if the French New Wave had never crashed on the shore of film history. For our hero lives in London, and as such, the whole piece is exquisitely filmed in black and white as a tongue in cheek take on French cinema of the 1950s/1960s, even managing to make many of the scenes and even sets appear to correspond to Breathless. But that's not all, the quick editing and sublime attention to detail makes this a must see for fans of short spoof films and new wavers alike. Clever, inventive and, so so British, if it wasn't so French. I saw this as a short accompanying another film, and it turned out to be a real treat. Maybe part of the charm was the surprise element (I hadn't realised there was a short), but this shows real promise. It's a stylish, 5 minute homage. A romp through the cliches of French cinema, as seen through the eyes of a cocksure London chancer. He's so convinced he's Jean-Paul Belmondo in Godard's 1960 classic, A bout de Souffle, that even his mum can't get any sense out of him any more. Suffice to say he charms, he poses, and he eventually gets the girl - a dead ringer for Jean Seberg. Nicely written and played, with some real laughs. But it won't make much sense unless you've seen Godard's film. Usually when I see that there is a short film in front of a main feature, this is a coded message for 'have a five minute nap'. What a pleasant surprise. I saw this in front of 'Together' (brilliant) at the G.F.T, and it gave me a real craving for Godard's movies and for that arrogant, self-conscious charm Belmondo portrays so effortlessly. Kris Marshall was tremendous and did a lot with his small part; one prime example is how pleased he is with himself as he shaves and smokes a lucky strike at the same time. Very Belmondo. The G.F.T is showing 'Bande a' Part' this month and I recommend that if you liked 'Je t'aime.' , you catch that to see where, in part, the inspiration for 'Je t'aime John Wayne' came from. 'Je t'aime John Wayne' is a 10-minute short film from 2001, so this one has its 15th anniversary this year. It was directed by Toby MacDonald and written by Luke Ponte. This duo scored a BAFTA nomination for their work here. The film is in black-and-white to remind of the days of John Wayne and Belmondo,w ho also plays a big role in this one. I personally did not enjoy the watch. One reason may be that I don#t have much of a connection with Wayne, another may be that the film seemed clumsy and try-hard occasionally in trying to re-enact a time long gone. I certainly do not agree with the BAFTA that this was among the best short films of 2001. It is a decent tribute by the filmmakers dedicated to their heroes, but it's not worth watching for general audiences I think. I give it a thumbs-down. Belmonde lives in 1990's London as a iconic, cool French man modelled on the new wave cinema of the 1960s. Unfortunately he is actually English and middle class a fact that his family won't let him forget no matter how hard he tries. At the start of this short I thought it was yet another pretentious French short harking back to the 60's in style and character. However after a few minutes we find that the ill tempered complex Frenchman Belmonde is really an English boy, pretending to be French. At this point the short becomes more enjoyable, rather than being pretentious it is actually making fun of those films and the people who try to be like them. This actually makes it very funny and I felt free to laugh at this art without destroying it in my mind. The `story' doesn't really go anywhere but rather allows a series of scenes where Belmonde is made fun of as he tries to be like his heroes. It's clever and funny and manages to hold the interest easily for the brief running time. With no story to speak of, it's never going to brilliant, but where many shorts fall into the trap of being artsy and pretentious this side steps this trap by poking fun at it's main character without actually making fun of the art itself (in this case French new wave). I am certain that Kriss must have been involved in the writing, is the bloke with the beard sleeping in the cinema credited? Write in and tell us cowboy. I have no issues with the film, and see no need to be critical. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am surprised that Kriss who is so young has been able to become exposed to so much idiomatic french film-making, there is hardly any shown nowadays on TV. I used to see a lot of Japanese and french film, as well as German TV series (remember derrick?) in the late 70's early 80's. It just does not seem to happen at all, with so much cheap TV time to fill. I even used to see polish and iranian film on the do#mestic channels. 2/3/2018 0 Comments Weather Girl• • • • Remember the days when TV weather reports were delivered by fat male meteorologists? Now it’s one thing to “stick with the same style”, but it’s another thing to photocopy and song and change a few things about it. I’m an Ice Prince fan, but I must say I was kinda disappointed. Paper chasing tactics I guess. Now with that being said, the song will probably still do well, and as a stand-alone song it’s actually good. As an individual, we find a hardworking and passionate creative who consistently tries to improve her craft. The documentary was shot when Stritch was 86 going on 87 (she is now 89). What is inspiring about Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me is it perfectly captures Stritch’s refusal to quit an industry that is often unfriendly to anyone over a certain age. There is a lot of humor in the documentary, but it is perfectly coupled with poignant realism. Stritch confronts age head on while she is still trying to perform shows. Even in her weakest moments, she is usually sharper than anyone 50 years her junior. While the documentary offers a glimpse into Stritch’s life, it makes the best of the short runtime. It never plays as a highlight of all of the crass things Stritch has said over her career, even though there is plenty to go on. This is an examination of a fearless woman who loves what she does and will continue to do so until she says she’s done for good. Matt is a senior at the College at Brockport. These are strange and breathless days, the dog days, when people are led to do things they are sure to be sorry for after. One day at that time, not so very long ago, three things happened and at first there appeared to be no connection between them. At dawn, Mae Tuck set out on her horse for the wood at the edge of the village of Treegap. She was going there, as she did once every ten years, to meet her two sons, Miles and Jesse. At noontime, Winnie Foster, whose family owned the Treegap wood, lost her patience at last and decided to think about running away. And at sunset a stranger appeared at the Fosters’ gate. ![]() Directed by Jay Russell. With Alexis Bledel, Jonathan Jackson, Sissy Spacek, William Hurt. A young woman meets and falls in love with a young man who is part of a. He was looking for someone, but he didn’t say who. No connection, you would agree. But things can come together in strange ways. The wood was at the center, the hub of the wheel. All wheels must have a hub. A Ferris wheel has one, as the sun is the hub of the wheeling calendar. Fixed points they are, and best left undisturbed, for without them, nothing holds together. But sometimes people find this out too late. 1 The road that led to Treegap had been trod out long before by a herd of cows who were, to say the least, relaxed. It wandered along in curves and easy angles, swayed off and up in a pleasant tangent to the top of a small hill, ambled down again between fringes of bee-hung clover, and then cut sidewise across a meadow. Here its edges blurred. It widened and seemed to pause, suggesting tranquil bovine picnics: slow chewing and thoughtful contemplation of the infinite. And then it went on again and came at last to the wood. But on reaching the shadows of the first trees, it veered sharply, swung out in a wide arc as if, for the first time, it had reason to think where it was going, and passed around. On the other side of the wood, the sense of easiness dissolved. The road no longer belonged to the cows. It became, instead, and rather abruptly, the property of people. And all at once the sun was uncomfortably hot, the dust oppressive, and the meager grass along its edges somewhat ragged and forlorn. On the left stood the first house, a square and solid cottage with a touch-me-not appearance, surrounded by grass cut painfully to the quick and enclosed by a capable iron fence some four feet high which clearly said, 'Move on—we don’t want you here.' So the road went humbly by and made its way, past cottages more and more frequent but less and less forbidding, into the village. But the village doesn’t matter, except for the jailhouse and the gallows. The first house only is important; the first house, the road, and the wood. There was something strange about the wood. If the look of the first house suggested that you’d better pass it by, so did the look of the wood, but for quite a different reason. The house was so proud of itself that you wanted to make a lot of noise as you passed, and maybe even throw a rock or two. But the wood had a sleeping, otherworld appearance that made you want to speak in whispers. This, at least, is what the cows must have thought: 'Let it keep its peace; we won’t disturb it.' Whether the people felt that way about the wood or not is difficult to say. There were some, perhaps, who did. But for the most part the people followed the road around the wood because that was the way it led. There was no road through the wood. And anyway, for the people, there was another reason to leave the wood to itself: it belonged to the Fosters, the owners of the touch-me-not cottage, and was therefore private property in spite of the fact that it lay outside the fence and was perfectly accessible. The ownership of land is an odd thing when you come to think of it. How deep, after all, can it go? If a person owns a piece of land, does he own it all the way down, in ever narrowing dimensions, till it meets all other pieces at the center of the earth? Or does ownership consist only of a thin crust under which the friendly worms have never heard of trespassing? In any case, the wood, being on top—except, of course, for its roots—was owned bud and bough by the Fosters in the touch-me-not cottage, and if they never went there, if they never wandered in among the trees, well, that was their affair. Winnie, the only child of the house, never went there, though she sometimes stood inside the fence, carelessly banging a stick against the iron bars, and looked at it. But she had never been curious about it. Nothing ever seems interesting when it belongs to you—only when it doesn’t. And what is interesting, anyway, about a slim few acres of trees? There will be a dimness shot through with bars of sunlight, a great many squirrels and birds, a deep, damp mattress of leaves on the ground, and all the other things just as familiar if not so pleasant—things like spiders, thorns, and grubs. In the end, however, it was the cows who were responsible for the wood’s isolation, and the cows, through some wisdom they were not wise enough to know that they possessed, were very wise indeed. If they had made their road through the wood instead of around it, then the people would have followed the road. The people would have noticed the giant ash tree at the center of the wood, and then, in time, they’d have noticed the little spring bubbling up among its roots in spite of the pebbles piled there to conceal it. And that would have been a disaster so immense that this weary old earth, owned or not to its fiery core, would have trembled on its axis like a beetle on a pin. 2 And so, at dawn, that day in the first week of August, Mae Tuck woke up and lay for a while beaming at the cobwebs on the ceiling. At last she said aloud, The boys’ll be home tomorrow! Mae’s husband, on his back beside her, did not stir. He was still asleep, and the melancholy creases that folded his daytime face were smoothed and slack. He snored gently, and for a moment the corners of his mouth turned upward in a smile. Tuck almost never smiled except in sleep. Mae sat up in bed and looked at him tolerantly. The boys’ll be home tomorrow, she said again, a little more loudly. Tuck twitched and the smile vanished. He opened his eyes. Why’d you have to wake me up? I was having that dream again, the good one where we’re all in heaven and never heard of Treegap. Mae sat there frowning, a great potato of a woman with a round, sensible face and calm brown eyes. It’s no use having that dream, she said. Nothing’s going to change. You tell me that every day, said Tuck, turning away from her onto his side. Anyways, I can’t help what I dream. Maybe not, said Mae. But, all the same, you should’ve got used to things by now. Tuck groaned. I’m going back to sleep, he said. Not me, said Mae. 'I’m going to take the horse and go down to the wood to meet.
